Photo Crush: Vanessa Püntener

All photos copyright by Vanessa Püntener

I’ve long been a fan of Vanessa Püntener‘s work, especially her photos of alps in the Swiss canton Uri. When I found out that her series was recently published in a book, I hurried out and bought it immediately – it is beautifully laid out and the pictures are fantastic. A few years ago, I attended a little photographer’s get together during which she presented the same alp series. I remember her saying that she used to spend summer upon summer on those alps, that she used to work and live with the people she photographed and that often, she wouldn’t take a single picture for days. I can totally see and feel this time spent in her pictures and it inspires me to keep working on my own alp series… I think this could be something more long-term.

In other photo crush-related news, I’ve been reading a book about the photo agency MAGNUM. Just last night, I found this beautiful Philip Jones Griffiths quote: “There is nothing in the world that is not important to see and photograph. The profession of photography is anti-elitist. There are very few professions where even when you are at the top, a household name, you might still be standing on a draughty street corner with your feet getting wet and cold, waiting for something to happen. At that moment you are at the same level as a homeless person, standing on a corner, begging. In most professions, the higher up you go, the more likely you are to go around in a chauffeur-driven car.”
