In the fall of 2006, I became obsessed with Diane Arbus. I read several biographies and tried to get a hold of every single book about her. I loved the work she did in circusses and freak shows and as a consequence, I got in touch with Circus Monti and Circus Knie to take some photos myself.

I also loved Diane Arbus’ equipment – she mostly shot black and white medium format, with a flash mounted on top or next to the camera. I tried to do the same thing at Circus Monti but found it quite impractical. The Pentax 67 I used was way too heavy, the flash made everything look very ghetto, often the flash didn’t go off at all and I wasted too much film. I was quite unsatisfied with the results.
