In 2000, on the height of the Kosovo war, the Bekaj family – refugees from Kosovo – was moved in next to my parents’ house. They were given a very old apartment that they partly had to share with another refugee family. I was very interested in their story and started taking pictures of them and their surroundings. When I look at the photos now, I feel that they are very clumsy and don’t really follow a storyline or a topic, but nevertheless they were important for me to take since this project started my obsession with social reportage.
